Groups that fight for civil and human rights together with the rights of immigrants have emerged to fight all these injustices. The groups’ efforts are not in vain as most of them have successfully accomplished so much in advocating for civil and human rights, and the rights of immigrants.
Lacey and Larkin Fontera Fund
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were illegally arrested by Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a Sheriff in Maricopa County. The duo are co-founders of Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times.
They sued the Maricopa County for the arrest and were, in turn, paid a $3.75 million settlement after they won the case a decade later.
The settlement they received which they called ‘Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund,’ is intended to fund the groups that advocate for human, civil and immigrants rights as they also advocate for civic participation and freedom for one to express themselves freely all across Arizona.
The Florence Immigrant and refugee rights project
The project seeks to provide free legal services to the immigrants in detention that face possible deportation. The free services are also available for the immigrant children that are unaccompanied. The project also offers humanitarian aid to torture survivors, mentally ill immigrants, domestic violence victims, and very sick immigrants.
Their task is to keep families intact, give people information to help them avoid persecution or any other form of injustice. This project was one of the many beneficiaries of the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
Justice that works
Attorney Heather Hamel founded the Justice that Works initiative in order to give Arizona a better criminal justice system. She said the prisons in Arizona are the fastest growing than any other state with the majority of prisoners being the black community. The members of this organization were against the SB 1070 and took to the streets to protest. It is an anti-immigrant law that stated that the police had the mandate to determine the immigration status of someone detained with a reasonable suspicion they were in the country illegally.
The leaders of the group were arrested on the day of the protests but were later released. The aim of the group is to make the state of Arizona a safe haven for all people.
Trans Queer Pueblo
Trans Queer Pueblo is an LGBTQ (Abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender queer) and a migrant community organization that celebrates different cultures, and nurtures leadership in young immigrants.
The organization offers free health services to needy patients. They also offer support to the LGBTQ community in detention and holds events in support of justice. The organization recently started a catering business where immigrants who have been released from detention can earn a living from working there.
What Role did Joe Arpaio have in The Frontera Fund?
If it wasn’t for the corrupt, immortal actions of Joe Arpaio, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin would not have founded The Frontera Fund.
As the Sheriff of Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio not only terrorized Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin but all of Maricopa County. Since Arpaio was elected in 1992, he has been accused of being involved in the beating and torture of prisoners, chaining a pregnant woman to a bed, and racial profiling. Joe Arpaio himself has admitted to racial profiling. When he arrested a Mexican citizen who was legally in the country as a tourist, Arpaio was ordered to stop personally enforcing immigration policy. When Arpaio ignored these orders, he was charged with contempt of court.
The Frontera fund now defend these people from the racist agenda of Joe Arpaio.
Larkin and Lacey are victims of Arpaio too. The same year he made the illegal arrest that lead to his conviction, he arrest Lacey and Larkin for content published in their paper.
In the above mentioned instances, Arpaio has shown total ignorance of the constitution. For this reason, Lacey and Larkin also created Front Page Confidential. As former co-owners of The Phoenix New Times, Lacey and Larkin are experts of the publication industry. Front Page Confidential intends to expose Arpaio and other politicians like him for the corrupt, racist individuals they are.
